Third XI Oakworth Cricket Club 2009
A third consecutive wet summer did not augur well for Bronte Fields, still awaiting the promised development at the hands of the Council and the Football Club. In the end 9 were actually played on the surface.

Once again a number of Captains were to be utilised which as previously is not ideal. With most of the under-17s already in the Senior Xls the side would look to the under-15s for youth. That meant increased opportunities for Jack Davison, Lewis Wrathall, Ben Fothergill, Matty Lee, Jordan Bates, Marshall Pedder, Harry Hurren and James Heslop.

Ground sharers Bradford & Bingley llls were first up and Steve Powell led the side to a 6 wicket win. Bingley Congs lls would prove a sterner test but Jack Davison completely bamboozled most of their batsmen, taking an amazing 7 for 26 to have them out for 151. Jon Hollingsworth led the batsmen to another 6 wicket win. The following week it was young Jack's turn to excel with the bat and his 53 combined with Lewis' 45 enabled 187-9 against Pendle Forest llls. Jack went on to add 3 for 19 to help claim a third win by 32 runs. Three out of three, what a start!

Thornton-in-Craven lls were on a downward trajectory and their taste of Division Five was soon soured as Jack with 32 and a 4-13 from Jordan Bates sent them packing with an 8-wcket defeat. The ll team at Haworth West end would be one of the Division's front runners and a narrow defeat for us was underlined by a serious on-field injury for keeper Tom Hudson. Paul Carter 53 and Jack on a fine run with 45 had tried manfully but a 4-wicket defeat resulted and left us still in a good seam with 4-0-1. A concession by Foulridge was followed by a 22-run win over Skipton CI lls after a stunning Ben Fothergill 79 and 3-16 once again showed the talent moving through the club. Lewis and Jack weren't to be outdone and Glusburn llls were seen off with 39 from Lewis and 6-for from Jack. 7-0-1 and we were right amongst the promotion candidates. But as always its more difficult staying there and Eldwick & Gilstead lowered our colours by 58 runs. the match did though allow u-13 Ben Howell to showcase his skills with 33. 51 from Ben and 4-21 from Lewis got us back on track with another win over Pendle. 8-0-2 approaching the half-way mark.

Ollie Stells 4-21 couldn't prevent a whalloping at Bingley Congs as the batting was skittled for just 54. And in between the rain another tanking at Little Marsden showed that whilst our youngsters were performing well there were others also quite capable. An even worse 52 all out once again allowed u-13 James Lee and Sam Nettleton to show their undoubted worth. Defeats to Skipton CI, Denholme and Gargrave pushed us yet further down the table and we concluded a year of promise with 11-3-8.

The batting was led by oft skipper Jon Hollingsworth who rounded of his year with a half-century against Gargrave. he tallied 334 runs at 25.69 to qualify for the league list.

He was out-performed by a startling year from Ben Fothergill who made 360 runs at 36 but had only 11 innings as he was in demand for 2nds and 1sts. his season included 3 half-centuries, the first to do that in the history of the side. The amazing start by Jack Davison with 150 runs in 6 innings and 27 wickets at 7.00 soon also had him in the 2nd XI.

Lewis Wrathall too had a pleasing season with 20 wickets and 130 runs. Marshall Pedder and Paul Carter also topped the 100 run mark in the rain-sodden campaign. All-in-all over 20 junior players turned out alongside Steve Powell, John Holly, Alan and Graham Fothergill, Paul Carter and Ollie Stell.

The team continues to do its job despite the Captaincy and administrative difficulties in its organisations. Furthermore the concerns about the ground have yet to be put to bed and 2010 may require a temporary new home until works completion. The progress of young players is without doubt fast-tracked as they learn there is nothing to fear from senior cricket opponents.  Davison, Fothergill and Wrathall will probably be 2nd-teamers in 2010 so there will be every chance for those slightly lower down the pecking order, who will have to contend with string pressure from a very promising under-13 squad. But for Jack Atkinson, James Heslop, Marshall Pedder, Harry Hurren, George Ingham, James and Matty Lee there is a huge year beckoning.
