Nidderdale Show

The local Craven Cricket League season had one final act to perform on Monday when the League XI travelled to Pateley Bridge to take on the Nidderdale Show XI, and unlike last year they came away victorious.

The weather was fine and overcast at the 11-00am scheduled start and skipper Steve Welch (Cullingworth) lost the toss and Craven were asked to bat first. Welch and Simon Bailey (Embsay) opened and put on 11 for the first wicket with the latter going for 8, caught behind down the leg-side. Gareth Marshall joined his club mate and they took the score to 57 when Welch was brilliantly run out by a direct hit for 24. Matt Nutter was the next man and the two batsmen set about the bowlers with gusto. The ball flew out of the ground was regularity. went at 131 for 59 an innings that included 5 sixes and 3 fours. Nutter continued the big hitting in the company Stephen Doane (Sutton) and they took the score to 189 when the former perished on the boundary for a super knock of 69 (4 sixes and 7 fours). Only one run was added to take the score to 190-4 after 35 of the scheduled 40 overs, when lunch was taken.

During the luncheon interval the rain arrived and it was touch and go that there would be any further play. However players from both sides got to work of the square and about 3-15pm the umpires agreed to restart the game. Craven declared on their pre lunch score and the opponents were to have the same number of overs to reach their target.

With the ball difficult to hold the bowlers saw 23 runs scored of 3.2 overs. Then Chris Brooker-Carey (Foulridge) bowled opener Ollie Uffindall for 8. A second wicket partnership between George Owram and Tom Durrance (Killinghall) looked to be swinging things in favour of the home side. With the score on 111-1 in the 21 over the latter was well caught in the deep by Nutter off the bowling of Neil Copping (Bingley Congs) for 41. Three overs and two runs latter John Ferguson (Bradley) struck to have Tom Simpson caught behind by Doane. On the same score the keeper then stumped Owram off the bowling of Copping for a stylish 45. One of the men, who broke Craven's heart in last year's game, was brilliantly run out by Brooker-Carey for 4. 130-5 became 130-6 when Nutter had Pete Sawray lbw for 10, at the end of the 30 over. The screw was tightened by Craven and the Nidderdale innings closed on 153-8. Copping finished with 2-30 off 7 overs, Nutter 2-35 off 8 overs, and there were wickets for Richard Craddock, Brooker-Carey and . All the bowlers were backed up by some excellent fielding which was in sharp contrast to that of the Nidderdale side.

All the players were presented with medallions by the Nidderdale Agricultural Society and the man of the match trophy, chosen by the Umpires, went to Matt Nutter.
