Oakworth Cricket Club is sad to learn of
the death of former Oakworth cricketer John
Mason. John, aged just 56, passed away
on 8th May and leaves a widow Judy and two children Stuart and Alison.
He lived at Cullingworth and was formerly a PE teacher at Belle Vue School,
Bradford and at Colne & Neslon College.
His Oakworth First XI cricketing career
began aged 22 on 24th April 1976 in a West Bradford League match against
Haworth Methodists, sadly with a debut duck but by only his 14th appearance
aged 23 he had scored his first 50 (53) versus Morton. His final First XI
appearance came on 31st August 1986 at Thornton-in-Craven when he didn't
bat. All in all John made 119 appearances for the First XI, batting average
13.89, his highest score of 81 coming on 21st August 1982 in the Dales at
Upper Wharfedale.
Perhaps John's proudest moment came on
17th July 1977 when he appeared and scored 14 in Oakworth's first ever Cup
Final winning team in their victory over Ingrow. John is pictured 2nd on the
left of the back row next to then club President Edwin Greenwood in the
above picture of that winning team.
Oakworth CC officials, committee,
players and supporters extend their condolences to Judy, Stuart and Alison
in their sad loss. |
