Reclaim of title?
Without
James Lee and George Ingham but with Ben Howell, Jack
Keighley, Oliver Huck, Will Greenwood and Sam
Nettleton showing top form in 2009 a solid base for a Championship
tilt is obvious. Nick Sharples, Tom Fothergill, Ben
Wedge and Brad Scrutton can all improve
as can Chandler Hughes, Nick Staton and
Chris Kemp and turn the squad into favourites
for the Brook Taverner Championship we claimed in 2008.
The uptake from the under-11 team
will be restricted with defections to Ingrow.
Winter Nets
As the cricket season fast approaches
(only 15 weeks to go !!), the club announces the arrangements for Winter
Nets. They will again be held at Oakbank School on Sunday
afternoons. For the younger age groups u-9, u-11, u-13 & u-15 Nets will commence
at 5:00pm till 6:00pm. The Nets will commence
Sunday February 21st for a
period of 6 weeks. The weekly cost will be £3.00 per player.
2009 Presentation Night
On Friday 2nd October
The
Annual Junior Presentation Night
took place as scheduled at the club house. The season had once again proved
better than expected with a largely under-12 team performing beyond
expectations. Reaching the Hindle Cup Final was a great achievement but a
combination of fixture-clashes with school and poor pre-match confidence
produced the runner-up outcome. Team Manager Simon Howell though expects
that 2010 will be 'our' seasonwith both League and Cup our objective.
The under 13 awards were as follows:
The batting prize went to a deserving
Jack Keighley who has progressed well beyond
expectations this year. With the ball skipper George
Ingham came out well clear to take the bowling award. For the
fielding prize u15 Jack Davison stood in for absent winner
Ben Howell. The all-rounder prize was well
contested but the outstanding Oliver Huck emerged a most popular and
deserving winner.
Later, the highlight of the evening was as always the award
of the
SA Labels Cup
for the best performance of the year. A difficult coaches verdict was that
James Lee's Under 15 Cup Semi-Final 27 and 2
wickets vs Upper Wharfedale was
the most deserving match-winning performance in a major event.
Oaks in a Spin
The
forecast said showers but they never did materialised at a sunny
Ingrow for the first Finals of the year. Oakworth lost the toss and
were asked to bat by League leaders Upper Wharfedale.
Openers Ollie Huck
and Danny Aspinall were rightly
cautious as the Dales attack wound up with high pace from Callum
Lockett and James Stephenson. Their containment plan worked at
least in part in that the high bounce did not deliver their
wickets. For 7 overs they resisted well whilst not setting the
score alight. They had seen off Lockett and Stephenson to bring
Jack Shepherd and off-spinner Matthew Price into the fray. The
tins showed just 10 runs when Price struck with his first ball
clean bowling Aspinall for 4. Bradley
Scrutton was the no 3 and he too found the very variable
bounce from both pace and spin difficult to master. A further five
overs on, Price was again the successful bowler when the watchful
Huck was deceived by the spin to offer a catch to Stephenson.
At 14-2 after 12 overs the Oakworth innings
was in real danger of grinding to a halt. Oaks Captain
George Ingham joined the battle and
his opening boundary at least momentarily kick-started the
sluggish Oakworth innings. He was settling nicely when he lost the
support of Scrutton who was winkled out by the leg-spin of the
diminutive Charlie Slater, the simple catch dollying to keeper
Will Peryer. Oaks now had their two senior batsmen at the crease
with James Lee at no 5. He didn't
last too long, caught by the sub fielder for a second wicket for
Slater.
At 28-4 after almost 16 overs Oaks innings
was under severe pressure and that produced the hammer blow when
Ingham attacked a loose ball from the returned Lockett only to see
it balloon towards the waiting James Stephenson. He made just 8
and the 31-5 score-line reflected the complete dominance of the
excellent Stags bowling, which gave nothing and tested the Oaks
with each change. Next over any attempt at a rebuild was thwarted
with a sixth wicket, that of Sam Nettleton
bowled off his pads for 0 by the mesmerism of young Slater.
Jack Keighley and left-hander
Ben Wedge added 7 but again couldn't
find any batting dominance to ruffle the Stags attack. Wedge was
unfortunate to be run out by a direct hit and Oaks were in tatters
at 38-7. That soon became 38-8 as Nick
Sharples got the dreaded 'goldie' to give Slater his fourth
scalp. Number 10 Tom Fothergill added a second boundary to the
innings but it was only a fleeting glimpse of the form that had
allowed Oaks to defeat Stags in an earlier league match. Matthew
Price return to the all-spin bowling front and Fothergill gave him
his fourth of the decimated innings. Finally Jack Keighley was run
out for 4 with the total at 47 after just 24 of the allotted 30
overs with under-11 Will Rankin on 1
not out.
The masterstroke had not been the
exploitation of the bouncy wicket with pace but the in-tandem use
of spin. For North Yorkshire District player Matthew Price had 4
for 3 and spin twin Charlie Slater 4 for 17. The impressive pace
of Callum Lockett returned him 1 for 5 from 5 overs.
With just apparently pride to play for Oaks
began with their pace-men James Lee
and Sam Nettleton and initially Jack
Shepherd and John Stephenson coped admirably albeit with many
aerial edges which went nowhere near Oakworth hands. They raced
away to 44 in the eighth over with a 10-wicket drubbing in
prospect. The still effusive Oakworth fielders and bowlers were
still in self-urging mode when youngster
Will Rankin responded to a boundary with the wicket of
Stephenson, bowled by a beauty. Two balls later the leg-spin of
George Ingham had the bat of Callum
Lockett by-passed for a neat stumping from keeper
Bradley Scrutton. 45-2 looked much
better before the winning runs inevitably came from Shepherd on 13
not out. Two years ago most of the Wharfedale boys suffered a
heavy mauling by Earby and this reversal of fortune was thoroughly
deserved as the game but out-played Oaks were comprehensively
defeated and they took their second Hindle Cup. Matthew Price was
awarded the man-of-the-match for a wonderful spell of bowling.
The teams were:
Upper Wharfedale
Callum Lockett (Capt), James Stephenson, Jack
Shepherd, Matthew Price, Kyran Clarke, Charlie Slater, John
Stephenson, Ted Wilman, William Perryer, Sam Lockwood and Jake
Parkinson
Oakworth
George Ingham (Capt), James Lee, Oliver Huck, Jack
Keighley, Sam Nettleton, Danny Aspinall, Ben Wedge, Tom
Fothergill, Nicholas Sharples, Bradley Scrutton, William Rankin
In the Final again
Our under-13s have defended the John Hindle Memorial Cup
with some style, reaching the 5th July Final after a 7 run win over Skipton
in the semi-final. The lads will face Upper Wharfedale Stags whom they
defeated last week in a pulsating match at Cracoe. It was the Stags first
defeat this season. The Cup Final team will be:
George Ingham (Capt), James Lee, Oliver Huck, Jack
Keighley, Sam Nettleton, Ben Wedge, Bradley Scrutton, Tom Fothergill, Danny
Aspinall, Nicholas Sharples & William Rankin. Reserve:

SO BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

Our first round tie with Steeton proved no obstacle in our
quest to hang onto the John Hindle Memorial Cup so ably won last year by
Jack Davison's team. The Steeton squad, in only their 2nd year in UAJCL, found
the going hard as our boys piled up 99-4 in 16 very cold overs. The runs
came from Sam Phillipson with 25 on debut, 20
from in-form James Lee and another 18 for the
fast developing Oliver Huck. With the bat the
Steeton innings formed around opener Harpreet Chagger
who made 22 not out, defying everything we threw at him. Sadly he had
little support and they ended on 38-3 as our boys didn't penetrate their
defences too well. There were wickets for skipper George and the two Sams.
The Second Round opponents will be either Settle or
Denholme Devils.

Under-13
Ben Howell (pictured with the 2008 Barritt-Stephenson
Cup) has joined the growing band of UAJCL players called up for trials at
Headingley. He is the third Oakworth junior this season to get the call as
Jack hainsworth (u17) and Willie Rankin (u11) have already had their stint
at the Bradford & Bingley Centre in Leeds.

This years West Yorkshire (West) cricket trials
are to be held on 4th May at Burley CC.
District Manager David Cooper has been advised of all last year's
performances so lets hope some catch the eye for the trials. Watch
this space.

The club is delighted to report that the Upper
Airedale Junior Cricket League have invited five of Oakworth u-12s to
be available for selection for the summer's 'Test' Matches.
Ben Howell, Sam Nettleton, Jack Keighley, Oliver
Huck and Nick Sharples are the fab
five following in the footsteps of George Ingham & James Lee (2008),
Jack Davison, Lewis Wrathall, Ben Fothergill and Matty Lee (2007) and
Joe Hoyle (2006). Their selection is based on last season's form
and they will have to show similar form to gain match selection. The
first match is on Sunday 17th May at Oxenhope vs the Airedale Junior
Cricket League (Aire-Wharfe).

To follow the 2008 under-13s success trail will
be a tough call for the young 2009 squad. There is though some
considerable talent in the side to be lead by
George Ingham. With James Lee also from the 2008 team the
additions of Nicholas Sharples, Jack Keighley, Oliver Huck, Sam
Nettleton, Sam Phillipson, Ben Howell, Tom Fothergill, Dan Aspinall,
Ben Wedge, Brad Scrutton and Chandler Hughes will contain potential
although the Championship might be step too far. Will Rankin, Dan
Scott, Jordan Powell, Ben Weatherall and others will keep the older
lads on their toes as the under-11s press for places.
In our defence of the Hindle Cup, Oaks will face
Steeton at home with a quarter-final prospect of either Settle or
Denholme.
UAJCL's Brook Taverner League Champions & Hindle Cup
Winners - Oakworth Under 13s

The under-13s celebrated at the
Rendezvous with almost 400 people at the UAJCL Presentation Night.
Seven of the boys made it to the Malham Suite to collect their
Brook Taverner Championship Trophy from
Pro Coach Academy director Chris Taylor
(pictured)
of Yorkshire CCC. Pictured are Joe Wilmore, Frazer Atkinson,
George Ingham, Jack Keighley, Ben Fothergill, Jack Davison (with
Trophy) and Lewis Wrathall.

Later Jack collected his 2nd UAJCL
Cricketer of the Year award. His under-13
award now sits alongside his 2006 under-11 trophy.
Chris Taylor handed over the memento to
Jack shortly after also giving him his u-13s bowling prize.

The
Annual Junior Presentation Night
took place as scheduled on Friday 19th September, 7:30pm at the club house.
Changes to team management for 2009 were announced in that Michael Davison
will manage the under 15s and Simon Howell the under 13s .
It is also a possibility that the club may enter two teams
in the under 17s league in 2009.
The
five under 13 awards for 2008 were
announced as follows:
What a Year!! An unprecedented Treble with our boys taking
the Malsis Cup
in June, The
Hindle Cup in July against Earby and they are all soon to
deservedly receive the prestigious
Brook Taverner League Championship
on October 3rd at the Rendezvous. The squad was streets ahead of anything in
the League and the pressure is now on for Third XI places in 2009!! Most of
the squad will move up to The Pro Coach Academy under
15 League in 2009 and will hopefully take the club to promotion back
to the top Division, from which it fell this year.
The League average lists are peppered with Oakworth
players and skipper Jack has taken the bowling prize with his 15 wickets.
The batting prize went to Ben
Fothergill after a season-long competition with both Lewis Wrathall
and Jack Davison. Matty Lee too had a cracking good year with the bat. The
bowling winner was Jack Davison to go with his
forthcoming League award. Not surprisingly Jack also took the u-13
all-rounder prize. The best fielder by some margin was the athletic
Jackson Rouse, who also excelled as a bowler.
Finally the Most Improved player received the loudest cheer of the night for
Frazer Atkinson's efforts.
The highlight of the evening was as always the award
of the
SA Labels Cup
for the best performance of the year. A difficult coaches verdict was that
skipper Jack Davison's Hindle Cup Final 56 vs Earby was
a stupendous match-winning performance in a major event.

Chip
off the block Jack Davison (pictured
with the 2008 John Hindle Cup) is setting
tougher and tougher records for Oaks juniors. He has had a long and
tremendously successful 2008 season playing for u-17, u-15 & u-13
teams as well as the Senior Third XI, culminating in his fabulous
inning of 56 in the Cup Final. "Scrumpy's" career innings total for
the juniors now stands at 105 and is the
third highest of all time and he still has 4 seasons to go! Ahead of
Jack is Jake Hoyle (now with Keighley)
on 114 and Mark Beckett 106 (now with Bradford &
Bingley) so Jack is in illustrious company.
Jack's ever improving left-handed run-making also makes headlines as
he has now amassed 1,055 runs in his 8
seasons (debut 2001). Our
under-13s skipper is only the 15th junior to reach the 1,000 run
milestone. In the overall Oakworth junior rankings (min
30 inns) Jack has shot up to 9th place with a
stunning average of 26.38.
Yes and you've guessed it - his tally of
leg spin victims now stands at 107 wickets
placing him second on the all-time bowling list with 7.27 behind
former first teamer Robert Jeffrey. Only Mark Beckett (1990-1999)
has more victims (136).
What a fabulous career to date Jack!!
Congratulations, but it does get harder to keep it going though !!

Make a date for 7:30pm on
September 19th
(Friday) at OCC for our annual junior presentation night. All the
prizes will be revealed including the fabulous SA Labels Trophy winner
for the best junior performance of the Year. Who will win the batting?
The bowling? The Fielding? The all-rounder? and who will be most
improved at all our age groups?

Oaks magnificent under-13s have added the
John Hindle Memorial Cup
to the recently acquired Malsis Festival Cup after a superb Final at
Cure Hill on Sunday 13th July. Oaks 135-6 proved 24 too many for a
gallant younger EARBY team who had u-12s Captain Shane Taylforth in
red hot form with 67. But Oaks too had their stars with skipper
Jack Davison taking the man-of-the-match
award for his 56 and 2 for 15. George Ingham
too was in fine fettle with 20 runs and a share in a 47-run
partnership with Jack. In-form opener Ben
Fothergill kicked off with 16 and on the bowling front new lad
Ryan Taylor picked up 2 wickets for 7 in
5 overs including the prize scalp of Taylforth courtesy of a fine
skied catch from Lewis Wrathall.
Now to complete the possible unprecedented treble,
Oaks need to take one more point from their 3 remaining league matches
to clinch the Brook Taverner
Championship. Those matches are against Pendle Forest (?),
Bradley (Sunday) and Oxenhope (27/07).
But so far so good..... fantastic lads blooming
fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oaks unbeaten under-13s have reached the
John Hindle Cup Final where
they will play Earby. The UAJCL Final is part of a double-header final day
at Oakworth. So come on all you oaks supporters and support our youngsters
in their quest for a treble.

The u13s have already won the
Malsis Festival Cup and
after a narrow victory over Wharfedale Stags now require just one
point to clinch the Brook
Taverner Championship.
The Oakworth team will be
Jack Davison (Capt), Lewis Wrathall, Ben Fothergill, Matty Lee,
Jackson Rouse, Jordan Bates, George Ingham, James Lee, Fraser Atkinson
& Joe Wilmore. Callum Corbett will be 12th man.
The afternoon features the under-17s
William Spencer Cup Final
Bolton Abbey vs Haworth West End. |
